TOSHIBA UNVEILS 2006 DVD RECORDER LINE WITH INTRODUCTION OF FIVE NEW MODELS IN MULTIPLE CONFIGURATIONS

Hard disk drives, networking capabilities, programming guides and HDMI™ connectivity highlight Toshiba’s 2006 DVD Recorder line

Toshiba America Consumer Products, L.L.C. ("Toshiba"), announced today its 2006 line-up of new digital video recorders. As a market leader in the DVD category, the highlights of the new line-up include an expansion of models with High-Definition Multimedia Interface (HDMI) and hard disk drive models with TV Guide On Screen® Interactive Program Guide.

Toshiba introduced five new models, including the RD-XS55 and RD-XS35, new hard drive recorders, the D-VR5, a DVD recorder/VCR combination and the D-R5 and D-RW2, two new single DVD recorder models.

"Our 2006 line is focused on connectivity and convenience," said Jodi Sally, Vice President of Marketing, Toshiba America Consumer Products Digital A/V Group. "Ease of use and the ability for consumers to access more content, as they choose, are key features of our new line-up."

Within the gigastyle™ family of products, the highlight of the line-up is the RD-XS55, a Multi-Drive (DVD-RAM, DVD-R and DVD-RW) DVD Recorder, with a 250GB* Hard Disk Drive (HDD). The RD-XS55 features an Ethernet port for system networking, allowing for greater integration with a PC including the ability to:

  • Stream copy-free recorded content or even live programming to a PC.
  • Add and edit title information to personal home videos from a PC.
  • Upload custom Menu backgrounds for creating DVD-R/RW discs.
  • Remotely schedule recordings via email.

The system networking of the RD-XS55 also gives users the ability to move copy-free content to another room if there are two of the units in the home. Now consumers can record content in one room and watch it at a later time in another.

Additional features include HDMI with up-conversion capability to 720p or 1080i. Upconversion can be used for all sources whether they are playing back content recorded on a DVD or on the HDD, as well as the tuner and inputs. In addition, the unit's DV input allows for the transfer of digital video camcorder recordings directly onto DVD media. Also new to the gigastyle concept, is the RD-XS35 which features a 160GB* Hard Disk Drive, TV Guide On Screen Interactive Program Guide, satellite systems programming, an IR blaster control, and a DV input.

Both hard disk drive models are capable of high speed bi-directional dubbing using DVD-RAM and both also feature Toshiba's exclusive EASY NAVI menu, designed to simplify operations by offering direct access to key functions.

The D-VR5 combines Toshiba's high-quality DVD recorder capabilities with a traditional 4-Head Hi-Fi VCR, allowing users to archive home VHS recordings to DVD within the same device. This Multi-Drive recorder includes ColorStream Pro® Component Video outputs and a HDMI output to deliver high quality uncompressed digital signals as it up-scales video to high definition (1080i/720p) resolution and transmits high quality audio through the single connection. The D-VR5 also comes equipped with a DV input and the capability to playback DivX® content.

Toshiba's D-R5 Multi-Drive, single disc DVD Recorder includes a HDMI output with video upconversion to 720p/1080i, a DV input and DivX playback. The unit also features five different recording modes.

For simplicity and value in a DVD recorder, Toshiba's D-RW2 offers recording to DVD-R and DVD-RW media. The front panel A/V and S-video inputs allow for convenience and simple connectivity.
